Alcohol Compliance License Subscription Lawyer In SC
In South Carolina, ABLs are generally up for renewal every two years. The renewal date is set by the county you operate in. As a result, it may not align with when you were initially approved. If your ABL expires, you must stop all beer, wine, and liquor sales immediately. Operating with an expired license can lead to substantial fines and a temporary or permanent ban from selling in the future. This is why it is so important to be prepared and start the renewal process early.
To get your ABL renewed, you need to file the required paperwork and prove that you are operating in compliance with state laws. All principals will also be subjected to a tax compliance check and must report any convictions since they received or last renewed their license.
Another part of the ABL application and renewal process for businesses that sell alcohol for on-premises consumption after 5pm includes providing the DOR with a Certificate of Insurance (COI). This document shows that your business has the proper insurance coverage for liquor liability. Confirming that your COI is up-to-date and reflects the minimum $1 million aggregate coverage is essential to maintaining your ABL. You are also required to submit a new COI each time it renews, which may not coincide with when your alcohol license renews.
New for 2026, you can apply for insurance mitigation factors at any time, including as part of your license renewal application. If you qualify, you can reduce your aggregate limit from $1 million to as low as $300,000.
